Painting Course: Basing with Light & Shadows

Learning Basic Painting Techniques and Lighting Placement 

A class on basic painting techniques like effective drybrushing and simple washes in addition to understanding basic light placement on a figure to help make it pop on the tabletop.

The class will run for about two to two and a half hours.  In that time, we will take a black primed model up to a tabletop ready finish.  We won’t go too deep into picking out all the details but focus on what is decently visible from the tabletop and what would be highlighted by a light source at the zenith of the sky.  Zenithal priming is a term often used for this. 

We will start with learning how to drybrush a light map onto the figure as well as how to use the drybrushing technique to not build up texture and deliver smooth, desirable, results.  From there we will cover how to thin a paint to a wash consistency and pick out our base colors with the wash.  Finally, we will apply some details as time allows to really bring the figures to life.

Models will be provided, but if you have something you want to work on specifically, feel free to bring it.  The only requirements are that the model is fully assembled and primed black.  Be sure to bring your brushes.  A #2 round brush and a decent drybrush (Monument has a really lovely set of drybrushes) are also required.  A simple wet pallet will be provided (And we will go over how to make and use them if you are unfamiliar with them) but if you have one already, feel free to bring it as well.
